This piece is a response to racism, classism, xenophobia, waste, pollution, greed, and the culture of self-satisfied narcissism that fosters feelings of entitlement and privilege and is used to excuse all of the aforementioned bad behavior. In other words, this piece is a response to middle class American consumer culture values and the fact that this way of life is hurting other people and our planet. This way of life is represented by the box that sits precariously atop the mountain of garbage, toxic waste, murdered people, and dead animals. The rest of the world is vibrant and beautiful, and in terrible danger. Jesus is also present in this piece- both as co-opted propaganda and as the man who I am sure would contemplate the perversion of his teachings with deep sadness but also utter forgiveness. He carries a needle on a length of thread, for the camel or the rich man who sits atop the globe, proclaiming the United State's dominance of the Earth's resources. A polar bear walks beside Jesus, a storm is rolling in, and we continue to demand "MORE" as if it is our due.
