St. Josephine Bakhita is the patron saint of Sudan. Born in the Darfur region of Sudan, she was kidnapped by slave traders and suffered many atrocities at the hands of her captors before being freed in 1883. She chose to settle in Italy, and joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity in 1893. She worked tirelessly for the poor and sick and raised money for foreign missions. She died in 1947 in Italy. She was much loved by all for her gentleness.
This painting is a collaboration between myself and my beloved husband, Marcus Kwame Anderson. I did the pencil drawing and he did the ink and watercolor. I was inspired to do the drawing after reading What Is The What, the excellent novel based on the life of Valentino Achak Deng written by Dave Eggers. Deng was one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. This account is moving, inspiring, and informative and I highly recommend this book to everyone!
