Spirits Among Us

My Favorite Days

Mixed Media. Made for: Bear and Bird Gallery Jay St ,Schenectady NY September-November 2024

My favorite holidays are October 31-November 2nd. October 31st is of course Halloween, and back in the days it used to be a day to either welcome or appease the returning souls of the dead (hence the giving out candy we do today). November 1st and 2nd are known as Dia de Los Muertos in Mexico, Zaduszki in Poland, and Feast of All Saints and Feast of All Souls in other places. I think death is both scary and not scary. On Halloween we explore the fear, and have some fun with it, and with all the scary unknowns. And on the next two days we can welcome back all our familiar, not scary at all loved ones who have passed out of this life, beloved people and pets who are never really far from us. When I think about everyone I love who has passed, and the signs and messages they send to me, death isn’t scary at all, because that’s where my children, brother and grandparents are! Thank you for taking the time to look at My Favorite Days, and please enjoy the movement from Halloween spookiness to celebration of family and loved ones as you go! This piece contains artistic contributions from my family, Marcus Kwame and JennyAdama Anderson.
